FAQS

WHAT IS DRY SALT THERAPY?
Dry salt therapy is a holistic, drug free, natural therapy. Dry particles of pharmaceutical grade salt as small as 1 micrometer (aka “micron”) are released in a low humidity environment. Chemists call this “a colloidal suspension of salt particles dispersed in air“. To give you perspective, the particles are smaller than the red blood cells coursing through your veins! Salt therapy promotes better breathing, sounder sleep, improved physical fitness and endurance, healthier skin, and overall wellness. Salt therapy also helps alleviate symptoms of many respiratory and skin conditions.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Pharmaceutical grade salt is ground into micrometer-sized particles by a professional-grade halogenerator. It’s then propelled into our relaxing Himalayan salt room. Clients breathe the dry salt air deep into the lungs. The naturally anti-bacterial salt air widens the airways, loosens clinging mucus, and reduces inflammation caused by urban air pollutants, pollens, and other irritants to our respiratory system. Breathing becomes not just easier, but more fulfilling. Non-inhaled particles land on exposed skin, helping with skin hydration, balancing pH, and inducing reparative and regenerative processes in the skin such as stimulating cell growth and microcirculation. Our Salt Therapy treatment room is also an excellent place for de-stressing and relaxing. We think you’ll find that the treatment helps your overall mental and emotional health as well. Join us for one of our yoga or meditation sessions.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I VISIT?
  • SALT Live Energized has a proprietary salt air formula that is more effective than most other salt therapy treatments. We recommend that you start with our YOU+ INTRO introductory plan for six sessions in three weeks.
  • After YOU+ INTRO, depending on age and any special conditions you have, we recommend at least one treatment every week.
  • Salt therapy is like working out or meditation or skin care – it’s most effective when you make it a part of your regular life.
  • It’s also great for combatting potential illness. Many clients say the treatment keeps them from getting a cold. Given salt’s natural anti-bacterial properties and research we’ve read, we’re not surprised.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?
Our beautiful, spacious, individual- or group-curtained salt room suites allows for dry salt therapy to be experienced alone or in a group setting. (Groups are asked to keep conversations low for the sake of other clients. Private group sessions are available by specific appointment.) A salt session lasts 25 or 45 minutes. You just lie back, get comfortable, and enjoy a therapy that we promise you’ll want to do regularly.
WHAT SHOULD BE WORN IN THE TREATMENT ROOM?
Any kind of clothing can be worn...but loose, comfortable clothing is recommended. For maximum skin benefits, wear clothing that exposes skin (shorts, tanks, skirts, bathing suits, etc). Our salt treatment room with separate, individually-curtained chaise lounges suites allows for semi-privacy. If you wish to remove your shoes, please cover your feet with our complimentary SALT Socks. Your SALT Socks are yours to take with you and enjoy at home (they make great slippers!) We ask clients to refrain from wearing perfumes or fragrances as a courtesy to other visitors who may have an allergy or sensitivity.
WHO CAN BENEFIT?
Almost everyone can and will benefit. Salt therapy is like little scrub brushes for your lungs. Your lung cilia will thank you! And salt pulls moisture from the air, hydrating your skin. Don’t shower after salt therapy for at least two hours! It is also a fantastic detox for these specific conditions:

Respiratory Conditions: Allergies, Asthma, Breathlessness and Chest Tightness, Bronchitis, Bronchial Infections, Chronic Bronchitis, Chronic Sinusitis, COPD, Cystic Fibrosis, Ear Infections, Emphysema, Hay Fever, Laryngitis (Pharyngitis), Pneumonia, Rhinitis, Sinus Inflammation, Sinusitis, Sleep Apnea, Smoker’s Cough, Snoring, Sore Throat and Tonsillitis, Wheezing

Skin Conditions: Helps fight against Skin Aging, Acne, Dermatitis, Dry and Flaky Skin, Eczema, Psoriasis, Rosacea
WHAT KIND OF SALT IS USED?
The same salt hospitals use. 99.99% pure sodium chloride (aka “pharmaceutical grade salt”) that contains no fillers or caking agents. The salt comes from a natural source and then is naturally processed to remove any non-sodium chloride elements. If you ever visit another salt therapy facility (but why would you?), make sure they use pharmaceutical grade sodium chloride. We do not recommend Himalayan or sea salt for Salt therapy. There could be dirt, clay, or another type of debris that could be harmful to the lungs. (Himalayan or sea salt are very healthy for the digestive system but not for the respiratory system!)
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
Dry salt therapy is 100% natural and drug free. There are no known negative side effects we have ever encountered. During and after sessions, you may experience a slight cough, minor tightness in the chest, or runny nose. This is simply the salt doing its work to remove mucus and toxins from your lungs and overall respiratory system. A few individuals have experienced a slight throat tickle. This can be treated with gargling warm to hot water (we think salt water is best!) In cases with an individual that is highly sensitive they can experience slight skin irritation or red patches; however, they go away after a few sessions.
IN WHICH CASES SHOULD SALT THERAPY BE AVOIDED?
Salt therapy is not recommended for individuals with the following conditions:
  • Existence or suspicion of cancer
  • Any kind of infectious disease
  • Acute respiratory disease
  • Cardiac insufficiency
  • Cardiac and coronary diseases
  • COPD with 3rd stage of chronic lung insufficiency
  • Coughing of blood/bleeding
  • Infections accompanied by fever
  • High blood pressure/hypertension in IIB stage
  • Any form or stage of tuberculosis
  • Intoxication
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • All internal diseases of decompensation
Please consult with your doctor.
WHAT ABOUT THE CONCERN THAT SALT IS BAD FOR YOU?
Consuming too much salt is linked to high blood pressure. With salt therapy, you are inhaling dry salt air that then enters your respiratory system, not your digestive tract. Additionally, the salt particles are so fine that even if you were to eat the same amount it would not pose a risk to your health.
DO YOU NEED TO STOP TAKING MEDICATIONS IF DOING SALT THERAPY?
No. It is fine to continue your medications as you need and as directed by your doctor. Since salt therapy is all natural it does not have any interactive effects with medications that we’ve ever heard of. Often, individuals who undergo salt therapy will find that they are less dependent on certain medication and that their symptoms are less frequent and less severe.
SAFE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN?
Salt therapy is known to be safe for women at any stage of pregnancy, though we strongly recommend pregnant women consult with their doctor before Salt Therapy treatments. Your health and safety are why we exist in the first place. We want you to be 100% sure and safe during your pregnancy.
IS SALT THERAPY SAFE FOR CHILDREN?
Yes. There are no known potential harmful effects. The treatment is completely natural and in fact, children often respond to treatment faster than adults. Children are required to be silent so as not to disturb other clients.
CAN ELECTRONICS BE BROUGHT INTO THE SALT SPACES?
We do not recommend laptop computers or any form of electronic that has a fan. Feel free to bring your iPod, iPad or MP3 player into the salt rooms. We encourage that you place it in a pocket or under a piece of clothing as we are not responsible for any damaged items. NO CELL PHONE CONVERSATION IS PERMITTED AND ALL CELL PHONES MUST BE ON SILENT (AND NOT VIBRATE) AT ALL TIMES IN THE SALT ROOMS. SALT Live Energized is not responsible for any damaged electronics inside the salt room.
IS THERE RESEARCH TO SUPPORT SALT THERAPY?
Yes, most research has been done in Europe where the treatment originated.

ARE THERE ANY CONTRAINDICATIONS?
Salt Therapy has a detoxifying effect by releasing toxins and bacteria from the body. People who are taking certain medications might want to wait until they are done with the medication. Always check with your doctor before starting treatments if you are taking medications for severe conditions.
DO YOU GET THE SAME EFFECT FROM GOING TO THE BEACH?
While going to the beach and breathing in the ocean’s salt air is good for your breathing, Salt Therapy upgrades the effect exponentially. Wet salt air can only reach the upper airways, “energizing” our cilia, speeding the cleaning of the respiratory system, and lowering inflammation.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER BENEFITS OF SALT THERAPY?
Salt therapy helps tackle inflammation, as well as mental lethargy, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), stress and depression, including postpartum depression. It can also help with insomnia, ear infections and snoring relief. While most of the known and reported benefits of Salt Therapy are for the lungs and skin, the beneficial effects of negative ions on mental well-being are of particular interest to many physicians and therapists. Negative ions, such as that produced during Salt Therapy, have been shown to increase mental clarity and mental well-being. Negative ions bond and neutralize the positive ions that are abundant in our busy urban lifestyle, which tends to cause mental fatigue and inflammation. Negative ions have been described as a natural antidepressant. There are several studies that indicate Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression in the winter months, can be effectively treated with Salt Therapy and LED light therapy. Research from the University of California showed positive ions can create anxiety, irritability and a hyper-serotonin state, whereas the negative ions, such as those created in a salt room, can neutralize the anxiety and irritability by normalizing serotonin levels which potentially improves one's mental outlook, mood and sleep. Additionally, a “clarity effect” has been described when talking about the benefits of negative ions and the brain, which describes improved mental concentration and performance.
WHAT IS HIMALAYAN SALT?
~500 Million years in the making, Himalayan Salt was formed as primal seas dried up and shifting land masses gradually covered these salty accumulations with the Himalayan Mountains. The resultant salt is now deeply mined from over 5,000 ft. deep within the Khewra Mountains. Himalayan salt is filled with over 80 minerals including potassium, magnesium, and calcium. We line our walls with Himalayan salt and we highly recommend you use it as one of your table salts at home.
